The What Ifs of life
I was just wondering. What if I had failed my exams? What if my parents decided not to move house to Jurong when I was in Primary 3? What if I was not admitted to NUS? What if I did not meet my Darling Dear? What if I did not make Political Science as my major? Would I still be doing honours?
The scariest "What If" that I can ever think of is, "What if I do not get my dream job or any half-way decent job when I graduated?" That would certainly be a big blow to my experience of an approximately two decades of feeding the brain with education and tons of information. I do not want to bring great damages to my already fragile brain due to taking an extra year in University, only to be duly unemployed after graduation.
The Singapore Government implied that there are more jobs available now, due to the healthy economy. But heck, why is it that many graduates are still finding difficulties in getting jobs? Not the graduates' fault. MNCs are looking for employees who are experienced and thus, being fresh grads means that they are at a huge disadvantaged. Of course, they would make exceptions for some outstanding graduates who perfectly meet their requirements. The question is, how many would they employed? Certainly, you can count all of them using your ten fingers.
Government companies such as the various ministries welcome fresh graduates with open arms. Nevertheless, the process of scrutinizing potentials is so rigid that many are left astray in the streets. Academic qualifications are being emphasised so much so that other qualities are being put aside. Book smart is an admirable quality but isn't street smart as important? I am pretty sure that employers would not want to have workers who are very brilliant but unable to relate to the clients. So please, listen here. Please do not refuse us, the not-powerfully- academically-inclined people from granting interviews just because we graduated with lower class Honours or a B.A. In fact, we can be better than those with first class Honours or even Upper Class!
Want to know why? It is due to the fact that We know how to balance life and books. Too much studying makes a person lose his touch with reality. Basically, people should not have too much of anything. It makes you rather one-sided. A balance of everything is an essential to lead a healthy, beautiful life. My zodiac sign, Libra tells me so and I, being an avid horoscopist keenly believed in it.
