I woke up with a real bloody runny nose today. This was not the usual-runny-nose morning routine that I experienced practically every morning (I have Sinus, Bleargh). It was a very bad one. Then, I realized what was the root cause of my problem. Looking out of the window, I realized how HAZY the weather was! Simply horrible. Stupid forest fires had ruined my Sunday morning.
Yesterday, my students were gossiping and complaining to me about their school lives. They told me about other girls who bad-mouthed and labelled them 'bitches.' One of my female students even shared her 'grievances' of having her boyfriend shamelessly stolen away by her enemy. She complained that her 'enemy' vandalized the class tables by writing horrid things about her. It turned out that their steadfast 'enemy' is a girl whom I taught in the next class.
It was quite hilarious listening to their stories. It made me reflect back my own secondary school life where everyone was also finding faults with each other. Life as a student must have been pretty dull since teenagers like to spruce things up and create mindless issues among themselves. I tried to justify the labelling of 'bitches' by the other girls to my students. I told them there was a possibility that the other girls feel threatened by their 'supreme' dominance and power in school. Strangely, they took my words for it.
Anyway, that is one particularly nice aspect of becoming a teacher even though I am just a part-time one. Students tend to listen to you for advise when it comes to dealing with life issues. On the contary, they would hardly listen to you regarding school work. Sheesh....
While reading the ST today, I stumbled upon an article about "Why foreign brides are hot while local brides are not." This article clearly reflected the social stigma of the Singaporean guys. That they are simplistic and having distorted world view. I would not call them conservatives because I think they are more of mindless people. Get this. This Singaporean guy has a Vietnamese bride because foreign ladies (as in women from Third World countries) does not expect much from him " Her requests are simple: Care for me, dont bully me and dont go out to look for other women." I just have one thing to say to him. "GET A LIFE DUDE!" For heaven's sake, this is the 21st century world and Singapore is at the forefront of development. We are not living in stone age where women are bestowed the special role of taking care of the men's needs only. Nowadays, women are carrying more responsibilities compared to men. Marriage is not simply just about obtaining the basic requirements, it should be more than that. The chauvinistic Singaporean male (who actually holds a degree holder) said that Singaporean women are not interested in him because of his small frame. In my opinion, he does not want to marry Singaporean women because he feels ENDANGERED by them! Singaporean women are a smart, ambitious and articulate lot. Many of the Singaporean men are not! Haha... No wonder many of the Singaporean women are marrying Westerners because at the very least, they are at a level of intelligence compatability.
